Audience with the Pope

Father Peter Chanel accompanied Marist founder Jean-Claude Colin to Rome in 1833, where they had an audience with Pope Gregory XVI on September 28, seeking approval for the Society of Mary. In 1836, the pope accepted the Society of Mary and entrusted the Marists with missions in Western Oceania.
