Murder of Peter Chanel
As Niuliki consolidated his power on Futuna, he increasingly perceived the missionaries as a threat. When his son, Meitala, converted to Christianity, Niuliki became enraged.
"Maddened by the disobedience of his son and the insult [to] his gods," Niuliki ordered his son-in-law, Musumusu, to kill the missionary. Musumusu followed his orders. Peter Chanel died on April 28, 1841.
